Sometimes, I really don't know what I am doing that people find helpful. Listen and care. Trust my gut. Why can't that just be the norm? In an ideal world, I would not be paid for that, it would be the norm, and people would expect, demand more. Sigh
Agreed. this is what people call "emotional labor," i think... I think this all the time when i meet students at my fancy expensive university who have never, until me, run into a professor who has expressed interest or concern in them. But that's not what will get me as a prof promoted...
